Dr. Rajalakshmi Srinivasan: Preserving India’s Classical Wisdom Through Scholarship and Translation

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], July 31: For more than five decades, Dr. Rajalakshmi Srinivasan has devoted her life to preserving, translating, and promoting India’s rich classical literary heritage. A distinguished Sanskrit scholar, multilingual translator, educationist and cultural exponent, she has built enduring bridges between languages, cultures and generations through her scholarship and lifelong commitment to education.

Widely respected in academic and literary circles, Dr. Srinivasan’s work spans Sanskrit, Tamil, Gujarati, Hindi and English, making classical literature accessible to wider audiences while strengthening India’s multilingual literary tradition. Her contributions have played an important role in preserving ancient knowledge systems and fostering greater appreciation for India’s cultural diversity.

Among her most significant achievements is becoming the first scholar to translate Kalki Krishnamurthy’s celebrated Tamil historical novel Ponniyin Selvan into Sanskrit. She has also translated Ramakirti Mahakavya (Thailand’s Ramayana) into Tamil and rendered the Tamil classical epic Manimeghalai into Sanskrit, creating meaningful literary connections between Indian and Asian traditions.

Over the years, Dr. Srinivasan has authored and translated more than thirty books covering literature, philosophy, culture, and classical studies. Her body of work includes translations of writings by noted Gujarati authors Dhruv Bhatt and Dinkar Joshi, as well as Gujarati poems by Prime Minister Narendra Modi into Tamil and Sanskrit, reflecting her commitment to promoting dialogue across India’s linguistic landscape.

A Ph.D. in Sanskrit from the University of Madras, Dr. Srinivasan has served as Professor, Principal and Chairperson of Poornaprajna Samsodhana Mandira. Throughout her academic career, she has mentored students, guided research and contributed extensively to Sanskrit studies. She has delivered lectures and presented scholarly papers at universities and cultural institutions in India and abroad, including the United States, Nigeria and Thailand.

Beyond her academic accomplishments, Dr. Srinivasan is an accomplished Harikatha exponent and cultural speaker. Through engaging presentations on the Ramayana, Bhagavad Gita, Devi Mahatmyam and other classical scriptures, she has introduced generations of audiences to India’s spiritual and philosophical traditions by blending storytelling, music and literature.

Her distinguished contributions have been recognised through numerous honours, including the honorary Vachaspati (Honorary D.Litt.), the Government of India’s Senior Fellowship, recognition from the Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu, appreciation from the Princess of Thailand and several prestigious awards for excellence in Sanskrit scholarship and literary translation.

Today, Dr. Rajalakshmi Srinivasan continues to inspire scholars, students and readers through her writing, teaching and cultural outreach. Her work stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of India’s classical literature and the power of translation in preserving and sharing the country’s intellectual and cultural heritage with future generations.
